Kenya's health financing landscape has shifted considerably in the past two years, and many patients are unclear about what is covered, by whom, and what they should expect to pay themselves. Whatever your cover, the same three steps protect you: get an itemised quotation, secure written pre-authorisation, and confirm what happens if the plan changes during surgery.
What a full quotation should itemise
Surgeon's fee, anaesthetist's fee, theatre time, consumables, hospital bed nights, histopathology, medication and post-operative reviews. A single headline figure without this breakdown is where most disputes begin.
Ask specifically what happens if an unexpected extra night is required, or if findings during surgery change the procedure — for example, a planned cystectomy that turns out to need more extensive work.
Get the approval in writing, with the amount and the exclusions stated. A phone call is not a pre-authorisation.
How pre-authorisation actually works
Your insurer needs a diagnosis, the proposed procedure code, supporting imaging and a clinical justification from your surgeon. Approval typically takes a few working days; complex or elective-looking procedures take longer and sometimes require additional documentation.
Never rely on a verbal approval over the phone. Ask for the authorisation in writing, with the amount and any exclusions clearly stated, and carry a copy on admission.
Common gaps to check before booking
Waiting periods on new policies, annual limits already partly used, exclusions for conditions considered pre-existing, and fertility-related procedures — which are excluded by many policies — are the most frequent causes of unexpected bills.
Where cover falls short, ask about staged payment arrangements and whether a day-case pathway reduces the total. It frequently does, without affecting the quality of the operation.
Why minimally invasive can cost less overall
The theatre cost of keyhole surgery can look higher on paper, but shorter stay, fewer complications and faster return to work usually make the total cost — including lost income — lower than open surgery. When comparing quotations, compare the whole episode, not just the operating fee.
Before you book a date
- Itemised written quotation covering the full episode
- Written pre-authorisation, with amounts and exclusions
- Clarity on what happens if the procedure changes intra-operatively
- Confirmation of who covers follow-up visits and histology
Common questions
Is keyhole surgery covered the same as open surgery?
Most insurers cover minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, but codes and limits differ. Confirm the specific procedure code with your insurer during pre-authorisation.
What if my cover doesn't stretch to the full amount?
Tell us early. Costs can often be restructured — a day-case pathway, staged payment or an adjusted plan — and it is far easier to arrange before the date than afterwards.
