Remote consultation is no longer an emergency workaround. Used properly it removes travel days, keeps follow-up on schedule and gives women outside Nairobi genuine access to subspecialist opinion. Used carelessly it produces prescriptions without diagnoses. The distinction lies almost entirely in choosing the right appointment for the format.
What works well remotely
Second opinions on an existing diagnosis, review of imaging and pathology reports, pre-operative planning discussions, post-operative follow-up, menopause and HRT reviews, PCOS management, contraception counselling and results discussions all translate well to video.
For surgical patients, an initial video consultation frequently means one trip to Nairobi instead of three — assessment and planning happen remotely, and travel is reserved for examination and surgery.
A well-run video consultation should end with a clear plan and a clear statement of what still needs to happen in person.
What needs you in the room
Any new pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding requiring examination, suspected pregnancy complications, screening tests, and every operative decision that depends on findings we can only get by examining you or scanning you ourselves.
We will always tell you when a remote appointment cannot responsibly answer your question, rather than proceeding on partial information.
Preparing for a productive video appointment
Send imaging, laboratory results and operation notes in advance rather than holding them up to the camera. Write your three most important questions down. Find a private space with a stable connection, and if there is a partner involved in the decision, have them present.
Send these before a virtual consultation
- Recent ultrasound or MRI reports and images
- Blood results, including hormone profiles
- Previous operation notes and histology
- A short symptom timeline and your current medication list
