Surgery abroad is straightforward when it is sequenced properly — and stressful when it is not. This is the timeline we use with travelling patients.
Start with a video consultation
Before booking any flight, we review your scans, reports and history in a remote consultation. That appointment establishes whether surgery is appropriate, what procedure is likely, what it will cost and how long you will need to stay. It routinely saves patients a wasted journey.
You will receive a written plan you can use to arrange leave, funds and accommodation.
Book the consultation before the flight. Half of the stress in medical travel comes from sequencing it backwards.
A realistic timeline
Most travelling patients plan 7–10 days in Nairobi. Typically: arrival and pre-operative assessment on day one or two, surgery on day two or three, discharge the same evening or the following morning for most keyhole procedures, then a review at day five to seven before flying home.
Complex endometriosis or large fibroid surgery may extend this. We would rather tell you that in advance than adjust it while you are here.
Costs and documentation
Ask for a written quotation covering surgeon, anaesthetist, theatre, hospital stay, histology and follow-up, and confirm what happens if an unexpected extra night is needed. Regional insurers vary widely in what they cover across borders — obtain pre-authorisation in writing before travelling.
You will go home with your operation note, histology results, discharge summary and a written recovery plan so that your local doctor can continue care confidently.
Flying home safely
For most keyhole procedures, short regional flights are appropriate from about five to seven days after surgery, subject to review. Move regularly in the cabin, stay hydrated, and follow any prescribed clot prevention. Do not book a non-refundable early flight before your review.
